Design:

This week’s focus was to create a promotional video for an existing app, advertising the apps features and benefits for its user.

Since quarantine started with COVID-19 back in March, gyms have been off and on closed to limit large numbers of people gathering in an enclosed space, especially while doing activities that require a lot of heavy breathing. Because of this, a lot of people’s lifestyles had to switch to at home work outs. I wanted to feature an app that had and is still helping me live life at home through the pandemic: Adidas Training.

Prototype:

First, I had to plan out my video’s storyline. I know that I always come up with better ideas as I go so my storyline plan was very general at first. I knew I wanted to start out but showing a need for Adidas Training, so I decided to use my own experience with gyms being closed due to COVID-19. I also knew this was a widely experienced problem this year because I would often see friends posting their frustration on social media about gyms being closed and not being able to stay fit. I also thought about which features of the app I found the most useful and wanted to capture those features in my video.

Next, I wrote out my voiceover script. This help me make my general storyline ideas more specific and ended up guiding me with what I needed to film in the next step.

Finally, I start filming. Finding the space to film was actually a little difficult because I live in a very small apartment and almost every angle I tried to shoot from had decorations, furniture, or just general things that didn’t match what I envisioned my video to have. After many trial and error shots, I finally found one angle that would work for my vision and I had to focus the camera on an object really close to the lens so that the background would be blurred out.

I actually needed to go back and forth between rewriting the script and filming because sometimes there wasn’t a good way to film what I had written or there wasn’t a good way to describe what was filmed without it turning into a long, extended explanation.

After finally getting the perfect blend of voiceover to video scenes, I had to find an Adidas logo and a song for the video background. I looked for an Adidas logo animation that fit my video and downloaded it, cutting it to fit the length I needed.

Surprisingly, the most difficult part of this project was finding music to fit the video. I needed to have no lyrics so it wouldn’t distract from the voiceover, motivational enough to get the user in an exercise mindset, but not get too loud (as many motivational/workout songs tend to get) because it might either distract from the voiceover or simply be unpleasant to some audience members.

Piecing all of it together, I had my Adidas Training app promotional video ready to go:

Analysis:

Overall, this video was pretty fun to make! I would have liked to get a video of different users using the app (especially to show different genders using the app), as well as different settings like a backyard or park to show the benefit of using an app on your phone versus going to the gym. If I were to make this video again, I would definitely want to do it during the day in different settings with different users to capture that this app can be used anywhere by anyone.

Going forward, I would like to make this video more professional by changing lighting or transition effects, and redoing voiceover with a more motivational voice to motivate the user. I would also like to challenge myself and make the video shorter, closer to the length of a real promotional video (15–30 seconds).
